YWCA to Gather Female Elected Officials

The 2nd Women Holding Office celebration will be held on Monday, May 3 from 6 to 8pm at Kirkbrae Country Club in Lincoln. This YWCA event is to celebrate and acknowledge the accomplishments of female elected officials in our state.

"With over 230 elected female officials in Rhode Island, it's conceivable that women have the opportunity to impact the current state of our state in very positive and creative ways," YWCA executive Deborah L. Perry says.

Women Holding Office is a rally call for women to come together, support one another and become part of the political process. Event partners include Big Sisters of Rhode Island, Center For Women & Enterprise, and League of Women Voters of Rhode Island. The event format consists of a cocktail reception with a keynote speaker, and recognition and introduction of female elected officials, followed by networking.

The keynote speaker is Melissa Unemori Hampe, a former domestic policy advisor to Senators Harry Reid and Tom Daschle, and former press staffer to the late Congresswoman Patsy Mink - author of Title IX and the first woman of color in Congress. As the director of government relations at MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership, Hampe advocated before Congress for mentoring public policy and funding. Hampe is vice president at McAllister & Quinn, a government relations firm in Washington.

Since 1923, YWCA Northern Rhode Island has been a vehicle for women to come together to spearhead local, national and international efforts for peace, justice, freedom and dignity. As an extension of these concepts, the public is invited to join in celebrating female elected officials. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance.
